What is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is a treatment technique in which fine acupuncture needles are used to release tight muscles, reduce pain and assist in restoring muscle function.
The exact mechanisms of dry needling are complex, however there is growing evidence to support its positive effects. These include inhibiting the transmission of pain signals in our nervous system and increasing the release of our own pain relieving chemicals.
When focusing on muscle release the acupuncture needles are inserted into tight spots in the muscle. During this process a muscle “twitch” response is elicited which is the muscle releasing. After needling often flexibility and range of motion are improved.
Importantly, dry needling can assist in reducing pain and improving muscle activation and function which can further enhance the benefits of rehabilitation exercises.
